ENEL to sell its Marcinelle power plant in Belgium to Gazprom

Italy's Enel SpA has decided to sell its Marcinelle power plant in Belgium to Russia's OAO Gazprom, for 227 million euro on a cash and debt free basis, as the biggest Russian company intends to enhance its presence in Europe's power production sector where it supplies 25% of gas requirements.

UK: Electricity prices to double in the next years to come in comparison to those in Germany

A new report offered by bank Credit Suisse stated that UK electricity prices could almost twice those in Germany in the next three years because of the impact of a new tax intended at supporting renewable power production. The report showed that wholesale prices could increase in comparison to those in Germany by 85% in 2016-17 and would maintain the trend in general for the next 7- 10 years.

EIA: Natural gas demand to slow by 2018

UK electricity production increased 20% in 2012

In 2012, electricity generated from renewables represented 11.3%, increasing in comparison to 9.4% in 2011. Generally, renewable electricity generation increased 20%, to 41.1 TWh in 2012 from 34.4 TWh in 2011, while capacity increased 26% to 15.5 GW.

IEA: Coal demand will continue to grow in the next years to come

According to a new report recently released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) coal could become the world's top energy source by 2017 along with oil. The IEA expects an increase in coal demand all over the world except the US, where natural gas is replacing the black mineral as feedstock for the production of electricity.
