Currently the UK has 16 reactors generating on average about 19% of its electricity and all but one of these will be retired by 2023.The country has a number of reactors which are currently reaching the end of their working life, and it is now unclear how they will be replaced.

Britain's finance minister George Osborne has announced that Britain could become a leader in shale gas extraction as he intends to create world's "most generous" regime. He revealed that it plans to cut from 62% to 30% the tax on a proportion of production incomes, in a move which aims to encourage shale gas exploration.

Crude oil futures registered a slight increase on Monday in thin trade, reversing earlier losses, as the market assimilated mixed economic and industry data from the United States and China, the greatest oil consumers in the world. Brent crude front-month edged up 28 cents to settle at $109.09 a barrel, after earlier dropping below $108 a barrel. The August contract expires on Tuesday. Meanwhile, U.S. crude oil traded 37 cents up to close at $106.32 a barrel after slipping below $105 earlier in the session, following the publication of the U.S. retail sales data.

Brent crude traded around three-month high on Thursday, backed by the expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep its stimulus programme to support the U.S. economy, while a considerable decline in crude stocks pushed U.S. oil to near 16-month peaks.
