German utility company E.ON has started the construction of the Amrumbank West wind farm, a 288MW wind project in the North Sea, which will consist of 80 turbines, and should be enough to power around 300,000 households, cutting more than 740,000 metric tons of carbon emissions every year. The first foundation has been installed at the site, 37 kilometres off the island of Heligoland.

Brent crude oil dropped towards $106 a barrel on Tuesday as Libyan supply increased and a resumption of Iranian oil shipments appeared to get closer. Recent weak U.S. economic data has also softened the outlook for fuel demand in the world's largest oil consumer.

In line with the current trend in Europe, Switzerland is likely to face an electric power shortage, except there is significant investment in new generating facilities over the next 15-20 years. Traditionally, Switzerland's longest-serving and most important source of renewable energy has been hydropower, but now, “new" renewable energy sources play an ever more significant position in Switzerland’s energy mix.
