Brent crude oil prices declined after data showed China's factory sector shrunk in January for the first time in six months. Brent crude settled up $1.54 on Wednesday at $108.27, reaching its highest level this year.

Almost exactly a month after the House of Lords voted in favor of it, the UK Government voted against the modification to the Energy Bill which would have to put limits on coal burning in the UK, sparing the energy market from an even tighter squeeze as aged nuclear plants shut later this decade. Britain's power market is already tight as ageing capacity is being retired and a modest amount of new generation is being built. Members of Parliament voted 318 to 236 against including the amendment in the bill.

Bulgaria’s parliament has approved a 20 percent controversial tax income from wind and solar power installations next year. The proposal was backed Thursday morning by 116 MPs, 38 voted against and 28 abstained.

Crude oil futures increased on both sides of the Atlantic on Thursday on optimistic U.S. economic data and a decrease in U.S. crude inventories. Brent traded above $115 early in the session as investors worried that supply disruptions could prolong in the Middle East after a U.S. Senate panel voted on Wednesday to back a military strike on Syria. Meanwhile, Brent crude rose 13 cents to $115.04 a barrel by 1:24 p.m. EDT (1724 GMT) after an earlier high of $115.55 and U.S. oil traded 81 cents higher to $108.04 a barrel after earlier reaching $108.54.
