Large coal power plants threatened by EU pollutant limits
Severer European Union pollutant restrictions might lead to costly modernizations or the shutdown of one third of Europe's large-scale coal power plant capacity, as indicated in a report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) on Monday.

Electricity market liberalization in Greece continues with the sale of coal-fired plants and coal mines
The energy ministry of Greece announced on Tuesday about the plans to sell by June 2018 some coal-fired plants and coal mines corresponding to 40% coal-fired capacity of the state-owned dominant power utility Public Power Corp (PPC), in order to open up the electricity market. Energy ministry will hold a market test to identify potential investors by November 2017.

Polish Energa is reviving a project to build a 1 GW coal-fired power plant with big bank backing
Many Western banks are divesting from the coal industry, nevertheless, Polish Energa fossil fuel project is funded through banks and the European Investment Bank. The main scope for Poland is to protect 80,000 jobs in national coal mines. Public opinion in the West is against the use of polluting fossil fuels. Pressure is high, like in December 2015 when Paris Agreement on climate change was promoted by U.N., society pledges to quit coal.

UK - first coal-power free day in over a century, according to National Grid
