German network operators have announced that the surcharge added to German electricity bills to cover the cost of renewables is set to increase 18 % to a record high of 6.24 cents per kilowatt hour. The charge has more than quintupled in the last 4 years, while increasing German household power bills, which now are the third- highest in the European Union.

The Compton Group, a green energy developer is aiming to build the UK’s largest solar park in North Wales. The project is likely to see something like 180,000 panels erected over 220 acres on land near Deeside Industrial Park and would create enough green electricity from the sun to power about 11,000 households. The development could create more than 100 jobs during the construction phase and a small number of positions once ready.

According to a study made by German Fraunhofer Institute, electricity generated from Germany's coal-fired power plants contributed more than 50% to the nation's electricity demand as production from natural gas and wind dropped significantly. Germany's coal-fired power stations registered a 5.4% increase in production in the first three quarters of this year, rising to 189.4 terawatt hours (TWh).

National Grid warned that the UK is at its highest risk of blackout this winter in more than five years. The demand for electricity could reach 95% of available supply if the country would be affected by a cold snap. The National Grid has said that this year the safety margin will be just 5%, being the lowest predicted since 2007.

According to official statistics, Scotland has recorded the largest ever drop of CO2 emissions. Scotland's renewable electricity industry generated 14,825 GWh last year, displacing 10.3 million tones of CO2, a 24% increase if compared to the 8.3Mt of CO2 displaced in 2011.
