Romania's major oil and gas conglomerate Petrom and U.S. top oil company ExxonMobil will have to invest $4-5 billion in the extraction of gas from a Black Sea field, in case additional data confirms their discovery, according to the statement made by President Traian Basescu on Wednesday.

Petrom, the biggest oil and gas producer in Romania, has reported the successful result of the exploration well 4539 Totea. The well, drilled following a recent 3D seismic program to a depth of 3600 meters in the Oltenia region of south-western Romania, is likely to contain substantial gas resources.

The major oil and gas group in Romania, Petrom, owned mostly by Austrian OMV, sold 75% of exploration assets in Ring Oil to its minority partner Mineral and Bio Oil Fuels Limited in Russia, since it focuses mainly on the Romanian and Kazakh activities. The total value of the transaction was not disclosed.
