Ireland is planning to get more than 70 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, according to a new report commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund of Northern Ireland.

The UK government is taking into consideration strategies to import wind power from Ireland to the National Grid via cables under the Irish Sea to north and west Wales. The cables would re-emerge at two sites in Wales with one of them at Pentir near Caernarfon, and the other one at Pembroke.

According to the EU- funded “Sustainable Energy for the Rural Village Environment” (SERVE) project, Ireland is to miss its EU energy efficiency target by 2020. The project stated that about 90,000 buildings will need important improvements every year by 2020, even if this year less than 50,000 buildings undergo energy upgrades.If Ireland doesn’t reach its objective by 2020, it will have to pay severe penalties.
