Gazprom and Total to develop arctic reserves

Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee and Christophe de Margerie, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Total met on Friday in Saint Petersburg to discuss the next step in the development of Shtokman natural gas field in the arctic waters on the Russian continent shelf, which is considered by Gazprom to be a strategically important move.

World wind capacity up 21 % to 238 GW

According to the new report released by Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), the global wind energy sector saw installations up by 21% in 2011 compared to the previous year, with an additional 41 GW, bringing the total capacity to more than 238 GW.

Shanghai invests in clean energy

According to the city government, a total investment of CNY18 billion (or €2.2 billion) may be required by 2015 to increase Shanghai’s capacity of clean energy, mainly wind power. The expenses will play a crucial role in Shanghai’s target of having 1% of its primary use from non-fossil fuels that are locally developed and creating a local new energy industry. The target excludes solar heating.

Japan to make a $34 bln investment in Australian gas

Japanese oil and gas producer Inpex and French energy giant Total announced on Friday a major $34 billion gas project off Australia, with most of the liquefied natural gas produced sent to energy-hungry Japan, as it is seeking for an alternative to nuclear power following the Fukushima catastrophe.
