China to build a new nuclear power plant

China has started the construction of a new power reactor in December, after lifting a construction moratorium imposed following Japan’s Fukushima disaster. The 200MW capacity reactor, which is being built at Shidao Bay in Shandong Province and will have a total cost of about 3 billion yuan (475 million dollars), will start generating power by the end of 2017.

Coal to dominate the 2013 markets in China and Europe

According to the World Energy Council , China detained an estimated 128 billion short tons of recoverable coal reserves in 2011, the third-largest in the world after the United States and the Russian Federation, about 13% of the world's total coal reserves. Chinese coal production increased to over 3.8 billion short tons in 2011, making China world’s biggest coal producer.

Russia’s oil output hits new record in 2012

Russia’s oil output hits new record in 2012, to a new post-Soviet high of 10.37 million barrels per day due to an increase in production at Rosneft. Russia had established its previous post-Soviet record in 2011, when the production amounted to 10.28 million barrels per day. According to the International Energy Agency, Russia's oil output hit the highest level at 11.41 million bpd in 1988, when it was part of the former Soviet Union and it accounted about 90 % of total Soviet oil output. This new record confirms Russia as the biggest oil producer in the world.

China: MoF has approved solar projects for a total of 2.83 GW under the Golden Sun project

The Golden Sun program was started by the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Ministry of Science and Technology, and the National Energy Administration in 2009, with the objective to support financially the projects ranging from photovoltaic generation facilities in industrial parks to large solar power stations. Under this program, the MoF has approved projects for a total of 2.83 GW, which need to be constructed by the end 2013.

U.S: Solar PV industry installs 684 MW in the third quarter of 2012

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, about 684 MW of solar PV capacity was installed in the third quarter of 2012, up 44% in comparison to the same period of 2011. In the first 10 months of 2012 solar alone increased by 133%, with total U.S. solar PV power capacity amounting now over 5900 MW, with 1.2 gigawatts of solar photovoltaics installed, bringing 2012 installations to 3.2 gigawatts, enough to supply with power about 1 million households.
