Masdar-led team agrees PPA for 1-GW wind project in Kazakhstan
UAE-based renewables developer Masdar has sealed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to deliver electricity from its proposed 1-GW wind farm project’s in Kazakhstan’s Jambyl region.
The deal was signed with the Financial Settlement Centre for Renewable Energy Sources Support LLP, a Kazakh government-owned entity, on the sidelines of COP29 climate meeting in Baku, Masdar said on Saturday. The UAE is leading the development of the project and is partnering with W Solar, Qazaq Green Power and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund (KIDF).
The PPA was announced just a few days after the project consortium sealed an investment agreement for the scheme with the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan.
Masdar and its partners intend to launch the wind farm’s construction by the first quarter of 2026, expecting the plant to generate electricity for about 300,000 homes annually once commissioned. The facility will be coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 600 MWh.
The wind park will be Masdar’s inaugural project in Kazakhstan and is set to become one of the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.
