Household energy switching increases by 56% before the price cap hike in April.

Energy supplier switching in Britain saw a significant increase in March 2025 as households rushed to lock in fixed energy deals before the April price cap rise. According to new data from ElectraLink, there were 354,000 supplier changes recorded last month, representing a 56% increase compared to March 2024 and a 31% rise from February.

This marked the second busiest month for switching since the energy market collapse in 2021, with only October 2024 recording more switches at 474,000. ElectraLink noted that the surge was driven by domestic customers, with over 90% of switches in March related to households and a 35% increase in domestic switches compared to February. In contrast, switching by SMEs and industrial and commercial customers saw a slight decline.

ElectraLink's analysis only includes voluntary switches, excluding Supplier of Last Resort events or trade sales, and it covers electricity switches across Great Britain. The data is collected and managed through the EMPRIS platform, which is also utilized by Ofgem and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
