SSE Renewables has begun construction on a 17.3-MW wind project in Italy.

SSE Renewables, the green energy division of British utility SSE plc, has commenced construction on its inaugural onshore wind project in Italy, which has a capacity of 17.3 MW.

The facility is situated in Puglia, Southern Italy, and will consist of two plants named Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva, as announced by SSE Renewables on Friday. The wind farms, located near Brindisi, will feature five Siemens Gamesa 132-3.4 MW onshore wind turbines and will be constructed by the Italian company Idoka Construzioni. Their combined output is projected to be sufficient to power approximately 6,000 homes each year.

Initial construction has already started with the installation of foundations and site access preparations. Following this, the installation of wind turbines will take place.

SSE made a final investment decision on the two projects last November and anticipates that these initiatives will create around 70 jobs during the construction period.

"The wind farm will contribute to Italy and the Puglia region achieving climate goals, enhancing energy security, and producing local renewable energy," stated Gianluca Mercurio, Country Manager for Italy at SSE Renewables.

SSE Renewables is also engaged in Italy, Spain, France, and Greece across Southern Europe, with a portfolio of approximately 2.3 GW of confirmed onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects.
