The natural gas pipeline from Igdır to Nakhchivan has been inaugurated.

The Igdır-Nakhchivan natural gas pipeline, representing the strong ties between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, was officially opened, as announced by Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, on Wednesday.
During the inauguration of the pipeline in Igdır, a province in eastern Türkiye, the Minister highlighted that energy collaborations between the two nations will enhance energy security for both Europe and the global markets.
'Projects like the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline, and the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) illustrate how Türkiye, in partnership with Azerbaijan, is pivotal in supplying oil to the world and natural gas to Europe,' he noted.
Bayraktar mentioned that the Igdır-Nakhchivan natural gas project is anticipated to satisfy the gas requirements of the entire Nakhchivan population.
'We are reinforcing the unbreakable ties and heartfelt connections between our two nations, making them even more robust through energy partnerships,' Bayraktar expressed. He also indicated that under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's guidance, the next initiative will focus on the electrical transmission from Nakhchivan to Türkiye.
Azerbaijan's Energy Minister, Parviz Shahbazov, attended the opening ceremony as well.
Shahbazov pointed out the pipeline's importance for both countries' energy security, stating it would aid in the development of Nakhchivan and Igdır.
He also highlighted the pipeline's capacity for reverse flow of natural gas.
- 500 million cubic meters of gas will be transferred annually.
In December 2020, Azerbaijan signed a memorandum with Türkiye to construct the Igdır-Azerbaijan Natural Gas Pipeline as a secondary option to secure gas supplies for Nakhchivan.
The project includes an 80-kilometer natural gas pipeline developed by Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAS) and Azerbaijani SOCAR, allowing for the transport of 2 million cubic meters of gas daily.
With an annual capacity of 500 million cubic meters, the natural gas pipeline is expected to fulfill the gas needs of the entire Nakhchivan population for the next 30 years.
