Statkraft intends to develop a hybrid project in Spain that will include a 58.9-MW wind farm and battery energy storage system.

Norwegian state-owned power producer Statkraft AS announced on Wednesday its plans to build a 50.4-MW wind farm paired with an 8.5-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Cantabria region of Spain.
Named Piruquito, this hybrid project will require an investment exceeding EUR 66 million (USD 68.5 million) and will emphasize the recruitment of local workers and the engagement of local contractors, according to Statkraft.
Piruquito marks Statkraft’s inaugural renewable energy project in Cantabria.
The company has applied for permission and an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the venture, which is presently in the public consultation stage. The project has already gained grid access and connection permits from its former owner, Enerfin, which Statkraft acquired in May 2024.
The Piruquito wind farm will be equipped with nine Vestas V-150 wind turbines, each rated at 5.6 MW. The lithium-ion BESS is designed to provide two hours of storage, as detailed in Statkraft’s consent and EIS application.
Once operational, the wind farm is expected to produce enough electricity to supply more than 15,000 homes each year. Statkraft aims to have the facility up and running by 2031.
Since 2018, Statkraft has established its presence in Spain, where it currently manages 700 MW of its own solar and wind farms, along with 755 MW of assets owned by third parties. The company is also developing 3 GW of renewable energy projects.
