Spanish Avalon is set to invest €8 billion in hydrogen and its derivative projects.

Spanish energy firm Avalon Renovables intends to invest approximately €8 billion in various green hydrogen and derivative projects across the provinces of Jaén, Huelva, Cádiz, and Málaga.

This investment is set to finance the construction of renewable generation facilities, green hydrogen and its derivatives for producing green ammonia, e-methanol, e-SAF, and biogas plants. Additionally, it will cover the infrastructure necessary for transporting, storing, and distributing the end product to the designated delivery points.

Avalon expects this investment to be allocated progressively over five years and anticipates the creation of 10,000 direct jobs throughout all stages of project development, including planning, engineering, construction, and operations.

The company plans to commence the initial phases of e-methanol and e-SAF production by mid-2028.

Currently, Avalon Renovables has a project portfolio exceeding 3.5 GW in Spain. This includes the Algeciras and Cadiz Bays initiative, recognized as strategically significant for Andalusia. This project entails building a dedicated point-to-point hydroduct that will provide the Bay of Algeciras with green hydrogen, facilitating the production of 750,000 tons of green ammonia annually, along with nearly 350,000 tons of e-methanol and 130,000 tons of e-SAF.

Huelva is reported to be another strategic site, where plans are in place to develop a plant capable of producing 350,000 tons of e-methanol each year in the Bay of Huelva area.

Additionally, the company is working on the Martos biofuel plant in Jaén, which entails an investment of over €100 million, expected to generate more than 200 jobs during its construction phase, slated for late 2025, and over 40 highly skilled positions during the operational phase, planned for late 2027.

In Málaga, Avalon is working on a project that will produce 30,000 tons of e-SAF annually.

Avalon revealed its investment plans during the second edition of the Green Hydrogen Congress held in Huelva. At that event, it also outlined its project roadmap and shared its vision for the sector with other companies.
