Brent crude prices fell on Friday as Europe’s debt crisis supported the dollar index recovery, extending the drop in oil prices for a second day after the announcement of the International Energy Agency about tapping oil from strategic reserves. Brent’s premium to US crude dropped under $14 a barrel intraday, from above $19 on Wednesday.

France may extend the operation of its oldest nuclear plant

According to an article in the French daily, Le Figaro, the oldest and the most controversial nuclear reactor in France, called Fessenheim, in operation since 1977, is in the next few days expected to receive permission to extend its life span for another 10 years by the Nuclear Safety Authority of France (ASN).

U.S. crude oil futures slipped to a four-month low level on Thursday on news that the International Energy Agency will release 60 million barrels of oil from its reserves to make up for a loss of Libyan exports in global oil markets and on weaker economic data.

The energy watchdog Ofgem has launched a set of rigid market reforms for Britain's six major power companies; involving the auction of more than one fifth of the electricity they generate, in order to increase competition on the market.
