According to figures released by the government, UK’s energy imports reached record levels last year, increasing once more worries of possible blackouts in the future. In 2012, electricity generated from renewables represented 11.3%, increasing in comparison to 9.4% in 2011. Generally, renewable electricity generation increased 20%, to 41.1 TWh in 2012 from 34.4 TWh in 2011, while capacity increased 26% to 15.5 GW.

French Environment Minister Philippe Martin, in an interview with Le Journal de Dimanche, has announced that the country's oldest nuclear plant of Fessenheim, northeastern France, is expected to be closed by the end of 2016, as promised also by the French president Francois Hollande during the electoral campaign.
