On Wednesday, oil prices continued their rise, supported by escalating geopolitical tensions and by a strong fuel demand in the United States last week. Hence, Brent crude increased by 0.5% to settle at $89.35 a barrel, while WTI crude stood at $85.43 a barrel, up 0.3% day-on-day.

Daily (03.04.2024): Supply concerns and the Middle-East conflict boosted oil prices on Tuesday
Oil prices surged to their highest level in five months on Tuesday amid worries about supply constraints. The surge was fuelled by fears of retaliatory actions from Iran following a fatal strike, attributed to Israel, on an Iranian diplomatic facility in Damascus. Brent crude rose by 2% to $88.92 a barrel, while WTI Crude posted a 2% decrease to $85.15 a barrel.

Norway’s Ambitious Plan to Store Carbon Dioxide in the North Sea
Norway has big plans to pump waste carbon from oil and gas operations and heavy industry under the seabed of the North Sea to be stored safely underground. It believes this method will be key to decarbonizing its fossil fuel activities in the coming years and supporting a green transition. However, some fear that this process cannot be done safely without risk to the environment. Others believe that carbon capture and storage (CCS) is merely a band-aid on a bullet wound and that countries should be fixing their carbon problem at the source rather than mitigating the effects of fossil fuel production. Nonetheless, so long as the world relies on oil and gas, companies will be looking for ways to produce lower-carbon fossil fuels through innovative methods, such as CCS technology.

France to continue recycling nuclear fuel beyond 2040
France will continue its treatment-recycling strategy for used nuclear fuel beyond 2040, with plans to extend the life of existing recycling plants and to launch studies for a new mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel fabrication plant and a new used fuel processing plant, the Minister for the Economy, Finance, Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, Bruno Le Maire, announced on Friday.

Inspection failure set to delay vital fuel loading at Flamanville
Delaying the start of fuel loading, which requires French nuclear safety authority ASN authorisation, would almost certainly lead to a delay in starting the 1.6 GW reactor, which is due to go into commercial service by June.
